The First Look at Casabase

We have had an incredible response to our introductory blog post for Casabase. While our focus is on the product and preparing for our first round of beta testing, we do realize there is an interest in actually seeing the product itself. We are hard at work to bring you videos that highlight the major functional domains, but in the meantime we’ve prepared some screenshots of the application using our test database, CASAsamp, that comes packaged with the application.

(Note: Of course we need to point out the obvious caveat that Casabase is about to undergo the first round of beta testing, so the screenshots below may change slightly from the final product.  The descriptions of functionality, however, will not. You can also expect minor UI tweaks…all to make your experience with Casabase the best possible!).

With Casabase, everything needed to build, administer, and use the product is all available directly within Excel. This becomes obvious the moment you install the Casabase Excel Add-In. After installing the add-in, those coming from other EPM and aggregation products might start to wonder where the rest of the installation package is. The good news is…that’s it! The installation is comprised of a few clicks and delivers everything you need to work with Casabase. The Casabase relational database itself is hosted either on an on-site instance of SQL Server or hosted in the cloud, whatever is the right choice for your organization. We will provide another post on the overall Casabase architecture in the future. (Spoiler alert…it’s unbelievably simple!)

The first thing you’ll notice after installing Casabase is the Excel ribbon:

Everything a user needs to interact with Casabase data appears on the ribbon. Of course, all standard Excel functionality is available as well, giving the user incredible flexibility in terms of data usage and presentation.

When using Casabase, the Member Lookup panel becomes a user’s best friend:

The Member Lookup panel makes it easy to lookup members in any dimension, find multiple members across dimensions, look up a member’s properties, and much more. Drag a member from the panel to the retrieve, click on a member in the retrieve to instantly find it in the tree, and other usability features are baked right into the experience.

The main retrieve area is where the rubber meets the road:

The free-form nature of Casabase retrieves makes it easy to work with data of any shape and size.  Select members from the Member Select area, type them directly into the cell, drag and drop around the retrieve area, drill up, drill down…all of this is possible with Casabase’s flexible UI.

To perform administrative tasks, simply pop out the Admin panel:

Administration of dimensions, hierarchies, members, security, rates, mappings, exports, Casascripts (you’re going to love Casascripts, by the way…) are all available directly in Excel. The functionality of this panel alone warrants its own blog post, so stay tuned for an in-depth look at everything the Admin panel allows you to do.

And finally, the foundation upon which Casabase is built, a relational database:

Pulling your data out is as easy as going into SSMS (or any other tool that connects to a relational source) and writing a select statement. Casabase provides data export mechanisms, but sometimes you just want to pull your data out directly from the source so it can feed other applications or so it can be used for other purposes. To that we say…please do! Transparency is one of our core principles and it extends all the way down to your data.

While this high-level overview speaks to some of Casabase’s core functionality, it is by no means a complete picture of all the amazing features available. Additional posts and informational videos will be coming shortly, but in the meantime if you have any questions, please feel free to send us an email on the Contact Us page.  We look forward to hearing from you!
